Verizon will be rolling out an update to their FiOS TV offering in a few weeks, first in the New Jersey market. After this upgrade the company is expected to release this nationally. FiOS 2.0 as some are calling it, is said to have an updated user guide, better search, and better IPTV functions. Verizon previewed some of the new FiOS TV features at CES 2007. This upgrade is part of "Project Mercury" that has Verizon improving and actually re-writing some of Microsoft's code that runs the supplied Motorola STB (set top box), as first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Verizon planned to roll out its FiOS TV service in three phases, adding more features with each phase. But there have been some reports that as the project progressed, Verizon encountered obstacles with the Microsoft code. Seems the Microsoft code powering FiOS was too big and bulky to run in the hardware provided by Motorola.
