Microsoft is planning the end of the wide use of the JPEG format. Just in time for the JPEG copyright that is ending. Microsoft is submitting their "JPEG-Killer" as they are claiming called HD Photo format to an international standards organization.
The format, previously named "Windows Media Photo" met with objections from partners and was renamed HD Photo back in November. Manufacturers apparently did not care to have something branded 'Windows' in their products. Not wanting the backlash in the industry, can explain the name change. By the way the "HD" does not stand for "high definition" according to Microsoft.
